Yoga, the potential escape

A few months ago I read Finding Your Inner Yoga: From Zero to Infinity (a Huffington Post Interview with Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman Yee, reposted on Yoga U), which I found fascinating. I wanted to expand upon some of the things they mentioned. Here is one quote that I really liked, as well as a development of one of my responses:

“One of the things we always teach is to use the practice to feel what is. Not to become something necessarily, but to focus on the unfolding of the present moment. There’s so much joy and so much beauty being offered to us in every moment.”

A yoga practice is an opportunity to feel what is – not a recourse to feel things as we want them to be. This can be scary, because some feelings outright suck. Sometimes it’s exceedingly difficult to recognize that a certain moment has any iota of joy or beauty in it. Continue reading

YES 2 – Coming Soon

Who’s ready for the next social event of YES? I sure am! And so, I bring you – YES! 2!

Yoga Enthusiasts Social, 2
at Yoga Black Lagoon
Friday, April 18th
6:30-8:00pm
“After Party” at the Parlor next door ūüėČ

Yoga Black Lagoon is hosting a second event of YES – Yoga Enthusiasts Social. And this time we’ll focus on the idea of saying “YES! …but, to what?”

The practice of yoga often invites us to “open up” and accept postures, emotions, and new ideas that we might have ignored before. In a sense, our practices often ask use to say “Yes” quite often – sometimes, even when we don’t want to do so. This event, we’ll have a chance to hear and discuss when we say “yes,” when we say “no,” and everything in between.

Join us at 6:30 in the evening for some yoga practices, discussions, and a potluck dinner. ***Please bring a dish to share.*** If geeking-out on yoga sounds like your kind of night, we hope to see you there!

RSVP, invite your friends, and share photos, discussion topics, and questions on our Facebook Event Page.

The Yoga Enthusiasts Social provides an evening of eating, socializing, and talking about yoga. YES is a recurring event, every few months, and is designed for all people interested in learning more about yoga. For more information, or if you’re interested in presenting or coordinating, email me at percolateyoga [at] gmail [dot] com.

A Yoga Exhibit!

Intro

So I went to San Francisco about two weeks ago for a friend’s wedding. While riding in the cab to the reception dinner, I drove past this:

An exhibit about Yoga?! Sign me up!

Long story short, I almost didn’t get to go – but I made it happen on my last day there. Continue reading

Percolate UP: A new Percolate Class, Wednesday nights

Lookie lookie, a new class!:

Percolate UpHappy Spring, friends! Spring cleaning has starting sweeping through closets, living rooms, and yoga schedules everywhere. I ended up having to drop my Wednesday afternoon class at Black Lagoon (but you can still catch me there every Thursday night!) – BUT I have added a new class to my schedule. Now on Wednesday evenings, you can catch a 75 minute slow-flow class at the Up Collective Art Gallery and Yoga Studio.

I am stoked to expand into another studio Рespecially another art-&-yoga studio Рand super grateful to have the opportunity to teach for two totally sweet groups of people. This new class will draw a lot on Vinyasa/Flow and Viniyoga Рso there will be some sweaty sequences, but also slow movements and static poses to encourage meditation, reflection, and peace of mind.  This class is an opportunity to get into touch with the prana in your body, as well as to relax and take a break from the busy world.

Come check out my first class next Wednesday, March 19th! And maybe even see me again on Thursday night at Black Lagoon =)

~ Peace, love, and snickerdoodles ~

YES, please!

Last Tuesday, Yoga Black Lagoon hosted the first Yoga Enthusiasts Social… and it was a rollicking, smash-tastic time. Thanks so much to all the yogis who came out that night (both in person and/or in spirit)!

The theme for our first Social Event was “Yoga Off the Mat – Together.” And yes, the idea of “yoga off the mat” is a bit cliche – yoga teachers talk about it in classes a lot; heck, even Sean Corne’s social activism group has that phrase as it’s name! But sometimes talking about something over and over again can shed new light on the matter – maybe since somebody completely new and different to you says the same thing, it hits your ears in a different way. Or maybe a new friend has never heard the topic before, and as you explain it to him/her, you hear yourself in a new light – new connections happen in your brain, and something that didn’t mean anything to you before now does! This is one phenomenon we got to talk about during our time together that night. =)¬†

But in general, the theme was to give us a chance to explore each other, and to figure out the direction that we want to go as a group.¬†Al final, the overarching sentiment seemed to be that it was so good (the way a yawn and a stretch feels so good after coming out of savasana) to have the chance to talk about yoga with each other! We all have our own individual, unique yoga practices, and all of us have a different thing we’re searching for – but we’re following a similar set of ideas, and it’s nice to get a chance to talk about our personal discoveries with others.

But a few more details about what our event entailed!

You can join the event on Facebook, invite your friends, and tell me your ideas about the future of YES. I’ll see you there!

New year, new schedule, new updates

Good 2014 to you! Happy that you made it here with me. Of course this means that things are gettin’ stirred up, and that we’re all trying new endeavors. Maybe working out more, maybe meditating more, maybe smiling more, maybe complaining a little bit less – or maybe just trying to stay as awesome as we already are. There’s no need to only focus on “fixing” the aspects of ourselves that we deem sub-par; it’s also totally worthwhile (if not more beneficial) to focus on maintaining the perfection we already have!

And keeping that in mind, here’s some more good news for ya:

Percolate Yoga has new things cookin’ up for you as well, including new online resources, new classes, and a new schedule!

New online resources, yeehaw

A “filling out” of the resources page is underway – and part of this includes my new Youtube channel and Google+ page.

The amount of videos and information available out there can be overwhelming. Furthermore, I’ve heard from many people that sometimes they just want to do some yoga at home – but, being fairly new students, they aren’t sure where to begin, who to trust, and how to do it “right.” So I’m paring it down a bit and making playlists of videos that I’ve done, and that I think are worth your time as well. I hope you find it useful! (Will this channel include some videos of my own?? Well, not right now – but maybe sometime soon!)

New classes, new schedule

I’m teaching two classes each week at Gallery Black Lagoon. There’s still the Wednesday class at 4:30pm – but it’s now a traditional Hatha class. Still very friendly to beginners, but now also more open to other levels of asana, breathing, and meditation practices.

My newest class is 7:30pm on Thursday evenings! This is a Gentle Hatha Flow to help you unwind before the last day of the week (if you follow a traditional M-F schedule). I had a super awesome turn-out for the class on our day of Free classes a few weeks ago, and also last week. Hope to catch you there soon, too.

Well, thanks for dropping by again! May you stay warm where the weather is chilly, and cool where it is sweltering. All the best to you and yours!
